Second grade students in Susie Kinkead’s class at Hayesville Elementary School won first place in the recycled snowman contest. The competition was set up as a project for the teachers and students to complete together as a way to get students involved in recycling, especially during the holiday season.  They had to use recycled goods. No new items could be used to make the snowman.

The repurposed materials Kinkead’s class used included boxes from the lunch room, Karissa’s scarf, cotton pillow stuffing, a cone cup, colored cotton balls, ping pong balls, Christmas catalogs and leftover craft supplies.

The judges, Mickey Noe, Matt Rogers and Myra O’Connor selected Kinkead’s class as the winner on Friday, Dec. 4. The Parent Teacher Organization awarded the class with a pizza party to be held Monday, Dec. 14.
