Candidate’s eligibility challenged
A complaint has been filed with the Clay County Board of Elections challenging the residency of Republican county commission candidate Dwight Penland.
The Board of Elections will hold a public hearing at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 20 in the multi-purpose room of the courthouse to determine if Penland meets residency requirements.
The complaint was filed March 4 by resident Tommy Davis, who is also chairman of the local Republican Party.
“It has been brought to my attention that Mr. Penland is not a resident of Clay County or of North Carolina,” Davis wrote in the complaint. “My challenge is based on reasonable suspicion and the belief of the facts stated above.”
