Commission awards bids
The Clay County Commission Thursday awarded a bid for $208,970 worth of work for construction at the Clay County Health Department to Board Chairman Robert Penland. Clay County Manager Mark Pullium said, “The county advertised twice for bids for the job of “upfit construction” on the health department’s bottom floor to prepare it for county offices. Although five different companies picked up specifications, Penland offered the only bid.”
Penland recused himself and turned Thursday’s board meeting over to Vice Chair Rob Peck before the matter was taken up for discussion. “We anticipated this project to be over $230,000,” Pullium said. “It is my recommendation we award this bid to Chairman Penland.” Commissioner Randy Nichols made the motion to award the job to Penland Builders of Hayesville. Commissioner Clay Logan offered the second.
