Drug use epidemic in county

The information shared was startling. Babies are dying as the result of a sleeping parent who is under the influence of a substance, rolling over on the infant and suffocating it. Children are being removed from their homes because of imminent danger to their lives. Babies are being born addicted to drugs and having to undergo detox. These are not stories from prime time TV dramas, this is happening here in Clay County.
“We are truly in an epidemic in this county.” Those words by Clay County Health Department Director, Janice Patterson, kicked off the Clay County Leadership Forum on Opioid Abuse held Tuesday at Hinton Center. “We are seeing young people impacted. We are seeing mothers having babies placed in foster care or in the hospital to be detoxed because the mother is on drugs during pregnancy.
