Murder under investigation
What began as a missing person investigation took a tragic turn, developing into a murder investigation after the body of a 17-year-old boy was discovered on Friday, May 31.
An autopsy confirmed that the body found in a wooded area off Fires Creek Road is Jordan Garcia, a local teen who was last seen by his family around 10 p.m. Friday, May 24, according to Clay County Sheriff Bobby Deese. His family reported him missing four days later on May 28.
Garcia was from Clay County, but had been living in Murphy.
Because of the extent of injuries, Garcia’s body was sent to the lab in Winston-Salem where dental records were used to identify him.
Deese declined to elaborate on the extent of those injuries or how Garcia was killed. “It was not a natural death,” Deese said.
Local law enforcement received confirmation from the autopsy late Tuesday night. Clay County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Todd Wingate informed Garcia’s family of the results at the sheriff’s office on Wednesday morning.
As of Wednesday, no one has been arrested in connection to the murder. When asked about a rumor that a man had confessed to the crime, Deese said that was not true.
“We’ve got people we’re interested in interviewing,” he said. “It’s ongoing.”
Deese asks that anyone who may have information regarding this case call Wingate at 389-3704, Ext. 13 and leave a message. He said all information will be kept confidential.
