A Bryson City man was beaten within an inch of his life during a confrontation at a Marble residence in Cherokee County on Jan. 9. He passed away two days later from his injuries.
The victim, Lou Raines, 28, of Bryson City, was flown to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn., after a 911 call came in just after 2 a.m. telling dispatchers to “send an ambulance fast” before hanging up, according to a release Friday from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies and Emergency Medical Services personnel found Raines suffering from severe head trauma. Raines’ fiancee, Katie Hanwell, of Murphy, said she was told he was beaten up with either a baseball bat or a pipe.
“He went over to, the house where he was beaten, to get some things back that were stolen from him,” Hanwell said. “I don’t know what happened, but they beat him to death. He didn’t deserve that.”
Hanwell said Raines was a loving partner and father figure to her son.
“He was my best friend,” she said. “Everybody loved Lou, he was an easy person to love. He would give anyone the shirt off his back.”
Raines was a 2006 graduate of Swain County High School and an avid outdoorsman. He was on the shooting team and played baseball for the Maroon Devils. Hanwell said she and Raines loved to fish together.
