Storm causes outages

A severe storm roared through the area late in the afternoon of Wednesday, March 1. It was a few hours later than originally expected; however, the short-lived storm hit hard.
According to Erik Brinke, director of Economic Development for Blue Ridge Mountain EMC, the storm caused major power outages in the company’s service area.
“The dispatch center took 966 trouble calls affecting 11,016 customers,” Brinke said. “The storm activity and outage calls began between 4:45 and 5 p.m., but we continued to find damage for several hours following.”
EMC crews worked all night to repair damage, including seven broken power poles and three overhead damaged transformers which had to be replaced.
