Thank You

Students from Hayesville Elementary school hold signs Wednesday morning expressing what many residents in the county feel — gratitude to the U.S. and N.C. Forest Service firefighters as they left after the morning briefing at the ground camp site. At a little after 8 a.m. elementary students and teachers walked to the Clay County Rec Park  where they lined the sides of the park’s road and cheered firefighters and ground crew staff as they left for another day of fighting local wildfires. Firefighters turned on the sirens and blew the horns as the children waved flags and held up signs they had made in school. “We wanted to let them know we appreciated them being here and away from their families,” said school principal Tommy Hollingworth.
