Friday, Nov. 4: 2:30 p.m. UPDATE FROM US FOREST SERVICE: Knob Fire - located southwest of Franklin in the Nantahala Mountains. Fire size is about 250 acres. Crews conducted burnout operations yesterday and last night to reinforce fire lines. Additional burnout may be needed today. Standing Indian Campground is open.

The Appalachian Trail is closed from Rock Gap to Winding Stairs Gap. Access to the campground is via West Old Murphy Road in Clay County. No structures are currently threatened. If an evacuation should be warranted, the Forest Service would contact the Clay County Sheriff's Office to notify residents, according to US Forest Service spokesperson Catherine J. Hibbard. Sheriff Vic Davis said notifications would be done in person.

The fire is considered about 10 percent contained which means they are in the process of developing fire lines around its perimeter which has been slowed in part because of the terrain of the mountains. "They still have a lot of work to do," Hibbard told the Progress Friday afternoon.
