Charles Dean Turner Sr.

 Charles Dean Turner Sr., 79, of Spartanburg, S.C., died Tuesday, March 20, 2018, at his home. Born May 20, 1938 in High Shoals, N.C. He was the son of the late Arnold Robert Turner and Willie Sue Early Turner. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Dean graduated from Tri-High in N.C. and Western Carolina University where he excelled in football and the classroom, winning the BYRD Scholarship Award as the top scholar athlete at the university. He did undergraduate work at Gardner-Webb University.

He began his career at Security Finance Corporation in 1961. After 33 years of employment he retired as company president.

Through the years, Dean enjoyed golfing, boating and fishing, both in Florida and the mountains of North Carolina.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to Kitty Tracy and her team of caregivers for the loving care they gave Dean during his last months.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Sandra Gray Turner; children, Charles Dean Turner Jr. (Holly), of Spartanburg, S.C., Jennifer Turner Henry, of Greensboro, N.C. and David Gray Turner, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Catharine Gula (Peter), Clayton, Ian, Emory, Jordon, Rebekah Shutt (Philip), and Kaita; sisters, Francis Robinson (Bill), of Mauldin, S.C. and Carolyn Jones (Paul), of Martinsville, Va.; and brother, Steve Turner, of Henrietta, N.C. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers Festus, Richard and Bob Turner and sister Barbara Edwards.

The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 23 at the home. A service honoring his memory was conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 24 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 309 Fernwood Dr., Spartanburg, S.C. 29307, by the Reverends Dr. Paul Petersen and Dale Rawlings. A reception followed at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Spartanburg Lions Club, PO Box 647, Spartanburg, SC 29304 or a charity of one’s choice.
