Donald Hooper, 94, of Hayesville, passed away Thursday, Feb. 23, 2017 at the Chatuge Regional Nursing Home.
He was a native of Clay County and the son of the late Joseph Leonard and Lillie Kitchens Hooper. He was a retired motor grader with the North Carolina Department of Transportation. He enjoyed gardening, walking and driving his tractor.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Zelpha Beatrice Moss Hooper; one son, Sherell Hooper and his wife, Lana; brother, Ronald Hooper; and sisters, Monree Waldroup and Benilee Hogsed.
He is survived by a son, Lavon Hooper and his wife, Doreen, of Hayesville; daughters, Marilyn Byers and her husband, Farrell, Rebecca Westmoreland and her husband, Mike, all of Winston Salem, N.C., Deloris Welch and her husband, Johnny, of Hayesville, and Barbara McClure and her husband, Chick, of Hiawassee; 13 grandchildren; 18 great- grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel Chapel, of Hayesville. Rev. Tom Gragg officiated. A graveside service and burial were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26 at the Old Shooting Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Chad and Eric Hooper, Ryan and Neil Westmoreland, Jesse Colston and Tim Cheeks.
The family received friends from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home, of Hayesville.
