Jack Byers, 77, of Warne, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2016 at his residence.
He was a native of Clay County and the son of the late, Charles Woodrow and Irene Byers. He was a retired heavy equipment operator with Colwell Construction. Jack was a United States Army Veteran. He was a member of the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. Jack's hobby was small engine repair. He was a true out doorsman. Jack loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Ben Edward Byers; a daughter, Gayla Lee Scruggs; brothers, Wayne, Roy Lee, Monroe and Claude D. Byers; and sisters, Helen Scharringhausen and Betty Sue Hooper.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Sandra Joan Byers; two sons, Charles Jack Byers, of Blairsville, Ga. and Steven Michael Byers and his wife, Phyllis, of Hayesville; four daughters, Lisa Darlene Doss, of Bozeman, Mont.; Becky Baker and her husband, C.N. and Karen Calhoun and her husband, Eric, all of Morganton, N.C.; and Susie Sherlin Curtis, of Brunswick, Ga.; brothers, Fred, Lawrence and Thomas Byers, all of Hayesville; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14 at the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. Rev. Brandon Paul Ware and Pastor Dennis Myers will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Wade, David, Benny Fred, Danny and Mike Byers and Butch Hooper. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons, Sean and C.J. Byers, Casey Calhoun and Jarred Price.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13 at the Townson Rose Funeral Home in Hayesville, where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service hour.
