Justine Lucy Jones Rozier
Justine Lucy Jones Rozier, 95, died Jan. 12, 2017 in Chapel Hill, N.C. Born in Ashland, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Anna E. Nicholls Jones and John Paul Jones. She was preceded in death by her siblings Jean Jones Ferguson; Janice Jones Fosson; John Paul Jones, Jr. and her husband, Samuel Stephen Rozier. They married in 1945 when he returned from WWII.
Justine received a Bachelor of Science in home economics and chemistry at Berea College as well as a masters and a PhD in family economics from Purdue University. Justine was a USDA Home Agent in Henderson and Clay Counties. She had a deep love for the mountains and enjoyed teaching varied skills — from caning chairs and making cottage cheese to preparing a budget and understanding family law.
Later as an Agricultural Extension Specialist in Home Management at North Carolina State University, she traveled through the state giving consumers advice in print, public TV, and more than 350 radio interviews. Her daughters remember her repairing the washing machine, sewing their clothes, knowing the answers to every puzzle, the definition for every word, and keeping track of every penny she spent.
Justine was a resident of Raleigh for 35 years. She was a deacon and Sunday school teacher at Longview Baptist Church, a member of the Raleigh Women’s Club, the Pacesetters Women’s Investment Club, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and a founding member of the NC Consumers Council.
After retirement as an Extension Professor Emeritus from NCSU she traveled the world, beginning with a people-to-people tour of Russian farms and an international home economics conference in Indonesia. More trips followed with family and friends throughout North America, Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and Asia. An avid reader, she read a book a week, even in her last year.
Justine is survived by her sister, Jeralyn Jones Taylor, of Wetumpka, Ala.; daughters, Diana Rozier Brantley (Richard), of Gainesville, Fla., and Hendersonville, N.C.; Lucy Rozier (Michael Clow), of Durham, N.C.; and Cynthia Rozier Suffern (Edward), of Chapel Hill, N.C. She is also survived by her grandchildren Jessica Brantley (Thomas Fulton), of New Haven, Conn.; Justine Brantley (Chris Williams), of Blacksburg, Va.; Deise Vitali, of Durham, N.C.; Danusa Cristina Rozier, of Wilmington, N.C.; Matthew Suffern (Diane), of Hixon, Tenn.; Paul Suffern (Caroline), of Rolesville, N.C.; and David Suffern (Rachel), of Wake Forest, N.C. She leaves 11 nieces and nephews and 10 great-grandchildren.
