Maria ‘Erika’ Steinberger
Maria “Erika” Steinberger, 93, passed away on April 21, 2019 at the Clay County Care Center.
Maria was born on May 4, 1925 in the small town of Tirschenreuth, Germany. She was a nurse during WWII and stationed in Vienna and later in Prague where in 1945 she, the hospital staff and soldiers were to be relocated to Russia as prisoners of war. She managed to escape with her girlfrind and returned to Germany. In 1946 she married Hermann Schubert, they moved to Munich, Germany where she had several jobs including modeling. In 1951, she married Michael Steinberger, her second husband and started a knitting mill in Munich. They spent their vacations traveling southern Europe. In 1958, the family emigrated to Canada and then to the USA (New York City) in 1963. The family got into the delicatessen business and she and Michael remained in New York until their move to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. in 1974 where they stayed in the deli business until their retirement. Her passion was traveling and they traveled extensively in Europe and the U.S.A. In 2008, Michael died and Maria returned to Munich, Germany briefly. She moved to Hayesville in 2012 to live with her son, Peter and his wife Theresa Schubert. In 2017, she moved to the Clay County Care Center where she was well taken care of until her death.
She was always a very positive and adventurous person who loved and enjoyed life and never complained about anything. She will truly be missed.
She is survived by her son Peter and wife Theresa, step grand-son Kevin and wife Melody Dorsch, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fritz and Margaret Haefele and family, Peter and Shirley Haefele and family, of Toronto, Canada, Liz and Irad Munro and family, of Nova Scotia, Canada. Saundra Jones, her special friend in Hayesville.
