William Fred McCray
William Fred McCray, 89, of Hayesville, passed away Monday, Jan. 30, 2017 in an Asheville hospital. He was born March 18, 1927 to Willard Burton McCray and Tilda Elizabeth McCray. He was a disabled Army veteran of World War II. Fred was a member of Fires Creek Baptist Church. He will be missed by all.
He was preceded in death by both parents, and his wife of 69 years, Annie Ruth Roach McCray, who died Aug. 20, 2011. He was also preceded in death by two sons, Robert and Charles McCray; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Haigler McCray; five brothers, Walter, Donald, Billy, Raymond and Junior McCray; and three sisters, Lucille McTaggart, Willie Dorothy Rogers and Nora Lou Smith.
Surviving are a son, Ray McCray and wife, Carolyn, of Hayesville; a grandson, Anthony McCray and wife, Tina; a step-grandson, Michael Barnett; five great-grandchildren, William, Gilbert, Larry, Elijah and Hannah; two brothers, Harold McCray and wife, Evie, of Hayesville, and Herbert McCray and wife, Wanda, of Hiawassee, Ga. and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2 in the Fires Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Aud Brown and Dallas Crowder officiating. The interment will be in the church cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Hayesville VFW Post 6812, American Legion Post 532, Murphy DAV Chapter 73 and American Legion Post 96. Pallbearers will be Benny Kirby, Tony Lands, Dale Roach, Larry, Gilbert and Billy McCray.
The family will receive friends from 12-1:45 p.m. Thursday at the Fires Creek Baptist Church prior to the services.
