William Wayne “Junior” McDowell, 67, of Hayesville, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2019 in a Murphy hospital. He was a native and lifetime resident of Clay County. Junior served in the United States Marine Corps and was a Vietnam War veteran. Junior was a talented gardener and could grow anything.

  Fred Byers, 82, of Warne,  passed away Thursday, Nov. 7, 2019 in Braselton, Ga. He was a native and lifelong resident of Clay County. Fred was the son on the late Charles Woodrow and Irene Byers Byers. He was a self-employed welder. Fred was a U.S. Army veteran.

Alice J. Matheson, 79, of Warne, passed away Thursday, Oct. 31, 2019 in a Clay County care facility. She was a native of Madisonville, Tenn. She had lived and worked in Security, Col. for 20 years and finally moved to Hayesville in 1986. Alice was of the Baptist faith.

Rev. Leonard Carl Mayfield, 91 of Hayesville, passed away peacefully Saturday, Oct. 26, 2019 at Chatuge Regional Hospital in Hiawassee, Ga. He was born Feb. 2, 1928 in Townley, Ala. to the late Dewitt Talmadge and Ethel Sparks Mayfield. He was a U.S. Army WWII veteran; he served in the 1940's.

Henry Auden Thistle, 35, of Brasstown passed away Saturday, Oct. 26, 2019. He was a native and lifetime resident of Clay County. Auden worked at Ironman Industries in Hayesville for several years as a machinist. Auden was a talented artist and enjoyed motocross. He was a lifelong lover of Batman.

Beloved mother, aunt, sister and sister-in-law, Deanne Faith Ross Poteat, 77, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2019 after a brief illness. She was born March 27, 1942, to the late Eli Robert Ross and Alice Oren Ross.   She is survived by her children, Kathryn (Paul) Petras, of Clemmons, N.C.

Claude Hodge, 86, of Andrews, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2019. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26 in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews. The family received friends from 1-2:45 p.m. Saturday at the Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews prior to the services.
