Track promoter Ray Cook pours out nickels as a group of kids await their cue to pick them up. Officials dumped 10,000 nickels on the track to help families with back-to-school expenses.

Payne holds off Chastain for win on Friday

Tri County Racetrack opened its gates for the annual “Back-to-school Nickel Night.” Along with the special kids event, the track also welcomed the 602 Thunder Series for the first time.
The action started with the Street Stock division. After announcing this will be his final season racing on the dirt, Marlin Gunter led the field to the green flag. He wasn’t able to stay in the top spot for long as Charles Devine Jr. powered around the outside of Gunter’s Camaro in turns one and two. Devine came around to lead lap one and every lap after. Devine held on to get the win. Gunter was relegated a second place finish with Michael Barnett crossing the finish line in third.
