Jackets split spring break games
Hayesville’s varsity baseball squad was the only Yellow Jacket team to see action during spring break.
While a few players were o≠ut of town, the majority of the team was available for head coach Jeff Vardo. Hayesville kicked the week off with a 15-2 win in Copper Hill, Tenn. On Thursday, the Jackets suffered a 12-0 home loss to Rabun Gap-Nacoochee, Ga.
Both hits and runs were plentiful when Hayesville faced off with the Cougars of Copper Basin.
Seven Yellow Jackets combined for 11 hits with Tyler Leek leading the hit parade with three hits and four RBIs. Leek’s stat line included a double and a home run.
Patience at the plate proved beneficial for Hayesville as 10 Jackets combined for 11 walks.
Junior Kyle Rhinehardt got on base the hard way twice after being hit by pitches.
Leek got the start on the mound and recorded five strikeouts in three innings.
Once Hayesville established a commanding lead, Vardo gave a couple of his younger players a turn from the pitching rubber. Freshmen Dwayne Cook and Lucas Barolet each threw for an inning and kept the Cougars from threatening.
The 15-2 blowout put Hayesville back in the win column after a tough loss to Murphy.
