The Hayesville Yellow Jackets football program took a step forward with a win over Allegheny the first round of the state playoffs. Unfortunately for the Jackets, their march into the playoffs ended in Mitchell County with a 58-6 loss.
Hayesville started the game receiving the opening kick off from the Mountaineers. The Jackets’ opening drive stalled, forcing a punt. The Mountaineers took over at their own 42-yard line and began a drive that ended in a 2-yard touchdown run.
Mitchell kept the momentum going and was up 18-0 with just over 4 minutes left. On the ensuing kick off, Hayesville was able to move the ball and Alan Gillis hit Chayton McClure for a touchdown. The Jackets missed the PAT, leaving the score at 18-6. Before the first quarter came to a close, the Mountaineers found the end zone again to make the score 24-6.
The first quarter touchdown was Hayesville’s only offense of the night and the Jackets’ defense struggled against Mitchell’s high powered offense. By halftime the Mountaineers had extended their lead to 38-6.
