People who complain about how “these kids are today,” probably haven’t met a group of young people like the visitors Hayesville had on the town square Tuesday.

The youth group from Bethel Baptist Church in Spartanburg, S.C., was topping off the yearly mission trip by praising God through music and song through their newly formed Praise Band. They also set up booths offering free hotdogs, popcorn and kid-friendly crafts and activities.

The group of about 29, which included chaperones, were staying at Hinton Rural Life Center, along with several other youth groups on a mission to help out folks in our communities.

“We do yard work for people who can’t and chop firewood,’ said Charlie Deetz, 13. “I feel great. I enjoy doing yard work. It’s fun sharing God’s  word.”

The young people ranged from seventh grade to recent high school graduates. They arrived in Clay County Sunday and will be heading back to South Carolina on Thursday, but not without leaving their mark on the county.

Mallory Robson, 13, summed it up like this: “As a whole, we’re here to help spread God’s word and help make the community happy.”
