New lumber was added to the front and sides of the old Hayesville Town Hall last week including a new platform “porch” for special outdoor presentations. The structure will feature a vintage exterior with the attached platform and handicap ramp as exceptions to the 1930s design but the interior will be very similar with various pieces repurposed from other buildings. A door from the Hayesville Post Office of the same era will serve as the front entrance and a desk believed to be part of the original office will be refurbished
Funds from the Historic Hayesville Inc. annual Steins & Wine event have been designated for the project since 2019; however, the HHI Board of Directors made a decision at their August 31 meeting to postponed the event until early Spring of 2022 and possibly have a second event in October 2022 which is the annual date established over eight years ago. Work will continue to make the structure a small classroom with proceeds from the past two Trash to Treasure sales and other community support.
The decision was difficult to make as the second year without the event. HHI Board members reviewed current effects of COVID and concerns from registered vendors to have staff available to participate as detrimental to safety for all participants as well as efforts by HHI to have a successful event. Appreciation goes out to an increased number of registered vendors and to sponsors who have always supported our local events. HHI Board and Friends of Historic Hayesville volunteers look forward to working with everyone next spring and dates will be announced very soon.
