Folk School students, staff and community revel in our annual English tradition of the May Day Parade and Maypole Dance at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, April 30. If you want to join in the short parade, meet at Festival Barn. The procession begins at 11:45 a.m. and will skip on down to the field outside the craft shop for the choreographed maypole dance around 12 p.m. After the maypole ribbons are tied there will be a simple circle dance, open to attendees. Then the Morris dance teams will perform in the parking lot outside of the craft shop. The event is free and open to the public and takes less than hour, so don’t be late.

In the spirit of stretching our legs before we do-si-do, we’re excited to introduce a new temporary format for Tuesday nights. The Folk School hosts “Community Tuesdays,” an evening of activities in Open House – the pavilion structure near the Folk School Garden.  Community Tuesdays features live music and dance components. Program details will be announced weekly. The focus will be on jamming, playing games, gathering, performing and taking part in dances that don’t require embracing strangers for long periods of time.

A donation of $5-10 per adult is suggested for most events, but all are welcome regardless of contribution. The Folk School is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and any funds raised support traditional arts and help with equitable pay for our performers. Want to get involved? We’re always looking for volunteers to help with our events and programs. Give us a call at 1 (800) 365-5724 to learn more.
