Victims of domestic abuse often justify their abuser's behavior. Here are a few actions that are never acceptable:

- Accuses you of things you absolutely have not done.
- Calls you names.
- Calls you degrading names.
- Controls all of your finances.
- Controls whether you work or not.
- Isolates you from your family and friends.
- Makes you feel you are unworthy of any type of happiness.
- Embarrasses you in front of people.
- Forces you to have sex or to commit illegal acts.
- Is jealous of any relationship, including children and your family.
- Puts you down – as in “you cannot cook,” “you’re ugly, fat."
- You have to stay with him/her because “no one else would want you."
- Slaps, punches, hits, kicks you.
- Threatens to kill you and your children.
- Threatens suicide.
- Threatens to call DSS on you or to take your children away from you.
- Blames you for the beatings as in “if you wouldn’t have caused me to be come angry, I would not have beaten you.”
