September is national preparedness month to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time. The theme this year is Prepare to Protect.
The first step in being prepared is to make a plan. Talk to your family and friends about how you would communicate before, during and after a disaster. Keep in mind that some plans may need to follow certain recommendations from the CDC due to the Coronavirus. Step two is to build a survival kit.
Supplies that will last several days should be gathered for everyone living inside your house. Some unique considerations may need to be made such as persons with disabilities, pets and people with medications. These kits should be readily accessible in case you need to evacuate your home quickly.
One the kits are built, make sure to update them as necessary. Think about important documents that you keep in your house. Make sure that you know where they are, and you are able to access them quickly if needed. Once you are prepared for an emergency, talk with your kids or other family members about the plan and where your supplies will be kept.
Some supply kits may include but not be limited to:
· Water
· Food (Non perishable food)
· Battery powered radio
· Flashlights, extra batteries
· First aid kit
· Whistle (to signal for help)
· Masks
· Can opener(manual)
· Local maps
· Chargers for cell phones with portable battery charging ports
