Candidate filing startedMonday opening the gate for perspective candidates in the 2020 election. In the first week, three people filed for local offices. All are registered Republican. Clay County Board of Education incumbents Reba Beck and Danny Jones are seeking another term on the board. Beck and Jones captured the highest number of votes for their respective offices in the 2016 school board election.

There are two seats open on the five-member board. Filing for school board requires a $5 fee. Board members serve four-year terms and have staggered year elections. Steve Hindsman has filed to run for a seat on the county commission board. As an unaffiliated candidate in 2018, Hindsman ran a close race coming in fourth, in a competition for three seats.

The three seats on the county commission board up for election this year belong to county commission Chairman Robert Peck, Randy Nichols and Clay Logan, all Republicans. To file as a county commission candidate, the fee is $104.52. The primary will be held Tuesday, March 3. Some or all of the races will be on the primary ballots depending on how many candidates vie for a particular office.

Filing for office continues until 12 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 20. For more details, call 389- 6812
