A Clay County woman died Sunday evening in a north Georgia hospital after allegedly being assaulted earlier that morning.
Sarai Sanoma Hatchett was initially taken to Chatuge Regional then transported to Northeast Georgia in Gainesville where she was pronounced dead at 9:07 p.m., according to Sheriff Bobby Deese.
When officers arrived at the campground on Highway 175, they reported Hatchett had suffered visible injuries including multiple skull fractures and bruising “over the entire body.”
Investigator Heath Woodard arrested Darrell Dywayne Williams, 47, at the scene.
The suspect was initially charged with assault: serious bodily injury. Deese said that charge will likely be dismissed and Williams will face a more serious charge. The grand jury meets Wednesday, Aug. 4.
Williams is being held under a $2 million bond.
On Facebook, the family asked the public to share any information that might assist law enforcement’s investigation. Call Lt. Heath Woodard with Clay County Sheriff’s Office (828) 644-4217 and Special Agent Derek Glasco of the GBI, (706) 348-4866.
“Sarai’s departure leaves an immense void. We may see an abundance of missed opportunities, but I ask instead that each of us focus on and celebrate the beautiful moments shared with her. I pray that we each find comfort in sweet memories, the love of our family and friends, and in our Heavenly Father who knows all things and has a plan for us all,” her sister wrote.
