Clay County Progress was the target of a break-in which apparently occurred sometime Sunday evening or early Monday morning.
On Monday a neighboring business called one of the Progress associates around 8:20 a.m. to ask if the newspaper had cameras because a structure full of wires had been struck and heavy tire prints were left behind in the small grassy area in the rear of Moore’s Plaza.
When the worker arrived, an office door was unlocked, a window was open and papers from file cabinets at each work station had been strewn throughout the office.
Clay County Sheriff’s Office was called to the scene and conducted a thorough investigation which included taking photographs, tire prints and finger prints.
No electronics were taken, but over $100 in cash was taken, which law enforcement speculated was probably the reason behind the break-in.
The Progress has taken measures to prevent further break-ins, taking the advice of law enforcement to install surveillance cameras among other steps.
