A man faces felony charges after the Clay County Sheriff’s Office responded to an April 23 domestic assault call at a travel trailer on Myers Chapel Road in Hayesville.

Ryan Zacharia Green, 39, was charged with one count each of felony assault with a deadly weapon, felony assault by strangulation and one count of resisting an officer.

The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. Sunday when deputies Steven Smith and Cory Scroggs arrived on the scene and found a female victim who had escaped a travel trailer and was awaiting first responders at a nearby residence, according to a release from Sheriff Mark Buchanan. The woman was bloody and suffered injury from a recent assault, according to the report.

While Scroggs interviewed the victim, Smith attempted to make contact with Green within the trailer. The victim alleged that Green had assaulted her by striking her in the face with his fist, strangling her with his hands and attempting to stab her with a knife, Buchanan said in the release.

After numerous commands to Green, which included ordering him to exit the home and confirmation that he was the only occupant, Deputy Smith deployed a burst of OC spray (pepper spray) into an open window of the travel trailer. The suspect then began to cough. Deputies gave further commands for him to exit the trailer — which he refused.

Buchanan said a second burst of OC was introduced through the window and Green decided to exit the home and surrender. Deputies rendered first aid, decontaminating Green from the OC exposure.

“I am thankful for our deputies for their dedication and commitment to the community.  Through their efforts a dangerous and volatile situation was diffused. In cases such as this, events evolve rapidly,” Buchanan said. “Deputies must act quickly and fluidly to ensure a successful resolution. Deputy Smith did just this. He relied on his training and experience and the tools at hand to bring a safe ending for all.”

Green had a Florida drivers license, but officers confirmed he resides in the trailer. He remains in jail under a $40,000 secured bond.
