Need some help acquiring back-to-school supplies? Clay and Cherokee County families are invited to get free student backpacks and lots of other goodies at the Third Annual Back-to-School Bash-Health and Resource Fair. From 1-5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20 the event will provide backpacks for the first 200 kids, primarily elementary and middle school children.
In addition to backpacks, school supplies such as pens and pencils, composition books, rulers, crayons, colored pencils and paper will be available to stuff the backpacks while supplies last. This project of Legal Aid of North Carolina/NC Navigator Consortium will bring together more than 30 other North Carolina agencies to share information about services available for local families.
Some of the organizations offering supplies and information include Region A Partnership for Children, Mountain Projects, Communities for Students and the health department. Smoky Mountain Pregnancy Care Center will be on-site, offering free pregnancy tests and confirmation ultrasounds. Information will be available about North Carolina Medicaid Expansion and ACA Health Coverage.
In addition, Nantahala Regional Library Book Mobile will be there. Plus, Catholic Charities will provide personal home and health items like hygiene needs, diapers and pet food. After visiting the resource tables, kids and adults may all receive a free snow cone from the Snowie in the Mountains truck, courtesy of Legal Aid NC.
In 2022, more than 80 families attended the back-to-school event, held at Hinton Center. The 2024 event will once again be at Hinton Center, in the Moore Hall Building, located at 2330 Hinton Center Road in Hayesville. Call (828) 389-5065 for details about the Back-to-School Bash.
