The Clay County grand jury on Oct. 10 issued a bill of indictment in connection to the 2021 hit and run death of Angela “Angel” Marie Grant.
Jared Lee Shook, 42, of Hayesville, was charged with the offense “hit/run fail to stop, property damage or injury/death not apparent,” according to the indictment. He was arrested and released on Oct. 11.
The charge stems from the Saturday morning of Feb. 27, 2021, when Grant’s body was discovered on the roadside of Highway 64 west, near Fort Hembree Road in Hayesville. She is believed to have died the night before while walking in the heavy rain along the shoulder where she was apparently struck by a vehicle that left the scene, according to earlier reports.
Grant, 50, was found by a local resident about 10 feet from the road at around 7 a.m. According to the accident report, Grant’s death occurred around 7:45 p.m. Friday.
Grant was discovered less than a mile from the jail where she had left walking that Friday at 7:05 p.m. after she was charged with misdemeanor driving on a non-impaired revoked license.
Autopsy results revealed that Grant sustained fatal injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle, Clay County Sheriff Bobby Deese confirmed at the time of her death.
Shook turned himself in to officials after the fatality and was interviewed by the N.C. Highway Patrol, the agency in charge of the investigation.
According to the indictment summary, Shook was driving a 2013 GMC Terrain on U.S. 64 and failed to immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of a crash in which the defendant was involved.
‘The crash occurred on U.S. 64 and resulted in the death of Angelica Marie Grant, that the defendant did not know of and did not have reason to know of. The defendant knew and/or reasonably should have known that the vehicle the defendant was operating was involved in the crash,” according the indictment report.
Grant was a resident of Dahlonega, Ga., formerly of Murphy.
