Superintendent Melissa Godfrey and Clay County Board of Education members met for a regular meeting on Monday, Oct. 28. Godfrey has reported to the board every month on the Hayesville Intermediate School now under construction. Progress from July through October at the site has been primarily in the new school’s infrastructure — water, power and sewer.

To date, progress in October included poured footings and 415 feet of storm drainage and Blue Ridge Mountain Electric Management Cooperative relocating power. There is a new temporary road to access the lower level at the retaining wall and other work included sanitizing water lines.

Daycare expenditures and projections were included on Godfrey’s report list. The projected revenues as of Oct. 28 are $307,784 with projected expenses of $300,856. Revenues in excess of expenses are at $6,929. Godfrey reiterated that the numbers are projected figures.

The residency audit continues; career development plans under the direction of Revonda Palmer are going forward to insure eighth graders have opportunities afforded to them per state law.

Starting July 1 all eighth grade middle and 10th grade high school students in North Carolina will need to complete a Career Development Plan to advance to the next grade according to the new law, N.C. Gen. Stat. 115C-158.10. This requirement begins for students finishing eighth grade in the 2024-2025 school year.

Godfrey requested funds for a schematic design of the middle school gym locker room which was approved by the board and approval was given for renewal of Bolton Construction and Service of WNC’s contract.

The next meeting of the Board of Education will be at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25.
