The Board of Commissioners received a clean bill of health regarding the county’s fiscal condition from auditor Holly Turner during their Jan. 4 monthly meeting.
In the brief meeting which lasted about 10 minutes, Turner told the board that she found no issues. “It was a clean audit,” she said. “You did a good job of paying down debt. Thumbs up from me.”
Turner acknowledged the hard work of county employees including Finance Officer Betty Patton who worked with the auditing company to provide informational material for the audit.
“We appreciate all our staff doing such a fantastic job,” noted Commission Vice Chairman Randy Nichols.
In other matters, commissioners approved the week of March 10 to publish delinquent taxes in the Clay County Progress which will be printed in the March 14 issue.
As a yearly formality, commissioners also voted to renew the county Conflict of Interest Policy.
Prior to the commission meeting, Water/Sewer Director Dusty Beal gave what turned out to be another brief update during that meeting. He said water/sewer work is almost done on the Highway 69 project.
Beal also noted that on New Year’s Eve the Water/Sewer Department crew was able to repair a leak at Carroll House Apartments in Hayesville after a long night of work.
Beal told commissioners a six unit, two-story duplex is being built in the Jackrabbit area of Clay County and that the department had approved the sewer application. He said the apartment builders indicated they would use 1,440 gallons a day, which is less than a half percent more a day of the department’s total capacity.
Clay County Commissioners meet the first Thursday of the month directly following the Water/Sewer District meeting which starts at 6:30 p.m. It is held upstairs in the Clay County Courthouse in the local government complex.
