Details are still being ironed out, but Clay County residents outside of the city limits can expect a $100 solid waste fee on their 2025 ad valorem property tax bills.
Commissioners approved an ordinance at their July 17 meeting to generate funding through a yearly fee which will go “exclusively to recover the cost of disposal of solid waste and operations of the landfill,” according to the ordinance.
The $100 will appear on tax bills as an itemized fee.
The ordinance calls for county residents to obtain a permit beginning Jan. 1, 2026. The permit will allow residents to dispose of five large bags, 30 to 40 gallons, or 10 small bags of household garbage per week.
Solid waste that is not considered household garbage or exceeds the bag limits will be charged a tipping fee of 5 cents per pound — the current cost of disposal.
