Clay County had a solid turnout in early/absentee voting bringing in 60 percent of the county’s registered voters. Including Election Day turnout, it surpassed 75 percent.
As of last week Clay County voter registration reached 10,304.
Election Board Director Rebecca Hall said overall Election Day went well. The precincts closed at 7:30 p.m. and absentees were released at that time. By 9 p.m. all the unofficial results had been posted.
In the meantime, Clay County candidates were able to avoid the rigors and costs of campaigning because they were unopposed, but they still fared well at the polls. All are Republicans.
In the county commission race, Randy Nichols came in tops with 4,911 votes; Dwight Penland got 4,644; and Rob Peck received 4,594, all of whom stayed above the 32 percent range.
In the Clay County Board of Education race Danny Jones was top with 4,965 votes followed closely by Josh Ashe with 4,828.
Glen Cheeks received a whopping 5,874 votes for Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor.
Clay County’s own Tessa Shelton Sellers received s 44,877 votes for the N.C. Superior Court Judge District 43A in her district.
“I would like to thank my precinct workers, board members, and staff for all their hard work and dedication to having a fair honest election,” said Hall. “We would love to thank the voters for their showing out and doing their civic duty. Also for being so thankful to our workers and being kind to each other.”
