Luminaries on the Lake 2023 seems to have been a hit with local residents who visited the Christmas light exhibit and live nativity. After driving through the event, many people shared on social media, encouraging others to go, as well.

“Local friends: Luminaries at the Lake is so lovely! Be sure to go tomorrow if you didn’t go today,” Melissa Godfrey posted. “It’s lovely,” Eden Carter posted. “The luminaries on the lake are stunning.”

Held December 8 and 9 at the Clay County Rec Park Campground on Lake Chatuge, the popular event is sponsored by the Clay County Board of Commissioners.

Clay County Manager Debbie Mauney shared how it began. “Clay County Senior Center Director Becky Grindstaff, along with others that grew up in Clay County, had fond memories of driving through the luminaries on Jarret Road, as well as watching the fireworks at the dam,” Mauney said. “We decided to recreate a little bit of this history and the board of commissioners gave their full approval.”

Grindstaff explained how they chose where to have the luminaries. “We wanted to showcase our Rec Department Campground and make it available to more of the community,” she said. “The drive also makes it perfect for luminaries.”

This was year three for the Luminaries on the Lake, but Grindstaff asked New Life Church Pastor Greg Carrol if they would like to do the live nativity. The started the first year and have continued.

When asked how the lights and fixtures were paid for, Mauney replied, “Most of the items are a one-time purchase that can be used year after year.  Our Clay County maintenance are to be commended for their creativity in hanging stars, lights, and making the reindeer and sleigh out of plywood.  We are fortunate to have so many talented employees that volunteer their time to help out with this event.”

Grindstaff smiled, “Everyone loved the reindeer and sleigh this year.”

Mauney said the event is likely to continue. “I believe the Board of Commissioners will continue supporting the Luminaries on the Lake because they have gotten lots of positive feedback from the community.”

Becky Grindstaff ended, “A lot of what we hear is how beautiful and peaceful the drive thru is. We are always thinking of ways to add to what we have already done while also keeping to the simplicity of the drive thru. We are so glad people are coming out and enjoying the event.”
