A coordinated, months-long investigation conducted by the Clay County Investigative Unit, Cherokee County Narcotics Unit and the State Bureau of Investigation has resulted in a significant drug seizure and arrests, according to Sheriff Mark Buchanan.
The investigation culminated in a motorcycle pursuit involving Kevin Dwayne Durden, who is suspected to be a key figure in the distribution of narcotics throughout Clay and Cherokee counties.
During the pursuit, Durden wrecked the motorcycle and law enforcement seized methamphetamine and cash from him.
During the course of the investigation, Durden was also observed leaving a residence located at 3608 Highway 64 West in Hayesville, belonging to Rennie Glen Davenport, who is also considered a key figure in this investigation.
Both individuals were identified as suspects.
Law enforcement subsequently executed a search warrant at the residence. During the search, investigators seized approximately 11 ounces of suspected methamphetamine, as well as three firearms. One of the firearms had previously been reported stolen in Cherokee County.
Clay County Sheriff Mark Buchanan emphasized the importance of inter-agency cooperation in addressing drug-related activity, stating that partnerships between neighboring jurisdictions remain critical in protecting local communities.
Davenport has been charged with the following offenses and is currently being held without bond:
• Trafficking in methamphetamine.
• Maintaining a vehicle/dwelling/place for a controlled substance.
• Possession of a firearm by a felon.
• Possession of a stolen firearm.
Durden has been charged with the following offenses:
• Fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle.
• Possession of methamphetamine.
• Possession with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver methamphetamine.
• Maintaining a vehicle/dwelling/place for a controlled substance.
• Aggressive driving.
This investigation remains ongoing. Additional charges may be forthcoming.
