It was a big night at the June meeting of American Legion Post 532. During the meal prior to the meeting, Post 532 celebrated the Army’s birthday. The oldest solider present, Mark Runge and the youngest, Randy Fletcher, performed the traditional cutting of the cake with a saber.

Post member Mitchell Shields and Randy Fletcher told the history of the Army. Commander Robert Seibert started the post meeting announcing awards that were given from the state department level.

First was the announcement of the Clay County Progress being chosen as the Patriotic Mass Media winner for the state of North Carolina. This award covered radio, television and newsprint.

Next, he announced that Prints Plus was selected as the small business Patriotic Business of the Year.

The Post also won first place in the newsletter category.

As the meeting continued, Seibert, announced several upcoming initiatives the post will be engaged in. The Post is making arrangements with the school to have a vet a month in the elementary, middle and high school assisting teachers on various topics. They are also planning to bring a Top Gun instructor, who flew the actors in the original movie, to speak with the students. Along with continuing the Junior Shooting Sports Program, the post will be creating a junior honor guard to present and post the colors at the various school events. The Post also had former Department Commander Frank Stancil to install the new officers for the 2023-2024 year.

Post 532 currently meets the last Tuesday of the month in the community room at the community services building below the library. For details call (828) 644-8497.
