Prayers for Logan and Trista and #LoganandTristastrong. Posts like these have been flooding social media following a wreck involving Trista Cheeks and her fiancé Logan Gordy. Cheeks, who is from Clay County, and Gordy are both firefighters in Upson County, Ga. The two were critically injured when their fire truck overturned during a routine call Saturday, July 15.
Both were airlifted to Grady Hospital in Atlanta where they remain. Cheeks’ parents, Tim and Shanda Cheeks, rushed to Atlanta from Clay County and have been with Trista since Saturday evening. Shanda said, “We will take all of the prayers we can get for Logan and Trista.” She said they do not have all of the accident details so they are not ready to talk about that, nor discuss the extent of their daughter’s injuries at this time.
According to local Atlanta news reports, the accident occurred just after 4 p.m. on Mud Bridge Road in Upson County. Georgia State Patrol reports say the fire truck flipped while navigating a curve. The two firefighters, Gordy and Cheeks, were thrown from the truck when it flipped.
The couple is engaged to be married in October and they had an engagement photo session with photographer Cindy Thompson just a few hours prior to the accident Saturday. In some of the photos, Trista is holding a sign which reads, “84 days until we become Mr. and Mrs.” In other photos, the couple is seen reading their Bible together and have their hands placed together in an open Bible.
Meanwhile, the Rock Hill Fire Department, the Thomaston community and other areas of Upson County have planned fund-raisers to help the couple with expenses. The Cheeks family did not share this information; however, we at the Clay County Progress feel Clay County readers will want to know.
In addition to much-needed prayers, here are some opportunities to help:
• Fire department T-shirts are being sold with all proceeds going to the families of the couple. Shirts range from $20 to $23 depending on size. The information shared shows the slogans #rockhillfdstrong and #LoganandTristastrong, along with a fire department emblem which contains drawings of the couples hands on the Bible. Cash or cashapp will be accepted: $Firemedic378. Contact Brantley Greene at (706) 341-7677.
• Saturday, July 29 Benefit ride called “Light Up Upson County For Logan Gordy and Trista Cheeks.” Registration begins at 9 a.m. at Rock Hill Volunteer Fire Department, 79 Rock Hill School Road, Thomaston, Ga. 30286. The event flyer lists several sponsors and ends, “Let’s spread the word for this wonderful family who has always helped anyone in a time of need now it’s our turn to return the favor and help them.”
