Rusty, homemade bombs were duds

Rumors that someone tried to blow up the post office in Warne are baseless.

So says Clay County Sheriff Bobby Deese, whose department responded to the discovery of two crude, homemade bombs near the main road that runs through Warne on Wednesday, June 1.

“It sounds a lot worse than it was,” Deese remarked. “The bombs were homemade devices that were very old and very poorly made. We don’t think they posed any real threat to the community. There are more explosives in a shotgun shell. The devices were very amatueristic.”

Both rusty devices were disposed of by the State Bureau of Investigation.

“The first one was found on Old Highway 64, between Young Harris Road and the post office. The other was about two-and-a-half miles down the road toward Brasstown,” Deese said.

According to Deese, neither device was dangerous.

“One was found in some bushes. The other was on the side of the road by a mailbox,” Deese said. “The first one, we couldn’t really tell what it was, but there were wires coming from it. The second was made out of plastic PVC pipe. It had a fuse, but it was inoperative to light.”

The sheriff’s office, SBI, Clay County Fire Department and Clay County EMS responded to the discovery of the suspicious devices.

Sheriff’s office investigators are working to determine who made the bombs, as well as who placed the devices where they were found.
