School adopts budget approved

Clay County Schools Board of Education met in a regular meeting on Thursday, June 27. The meeting was scheduled closer to the end of Hayesville schools’ 2023/2024 fiscal year ending June 30. Aside from rescheduling the customary Monday meeting to a Thursday, the budget presented by Chief Financial Officer Shelley Hollingsworth was reviewed and approved.

Superintendent Melissa Godfrey and Chairman Jason Shook were in virtual attendance and with four board members present, all giving approval to the summary of budget resolutions and amendments.

The total state appropriated revenue was $13,573,988.13, and matched school expenditures which include teachers’ and principals’ payroll and operational support services.

The local current expense fund of $2,440,833 is county appropriated and also includes fines, forfeitures and a forestry fund from the federal government.

Hayesville schools’ food service fund had a total revenue of $1,341,200 from state and federal monies, sales and local miscellaneous revenues as shown:

• State reimbursements - $700.

• Federal reimbursements/grants $700,000.

• Sales $444,000.

• Local/miscellaneous revenue $4,000.

• Appropriated fund balance $50,000.

• Interfund transfer $142,500.

The schools’ food service fund expenditures of $1,341,200 include nutrition services and indirect costs.

The federal grant fund totaled $2,206,265. The capitol outlay fund appropriated from the county, combined with the lottery funds for state school building totaled $289,665.

Other specific revenue funds coming from numerous sources include grants not administered through the N.C. Department of Public Instruction to total $3,744,479.

Revenues and expenditures in all areas of the budget were balanced and a complete summery of the Hayesville schools’ 2023/2024 budget resolution will be available on the Clay County Schools website: www.claycountyschools.org.

Textbook approval for Hayesville Primary School and Hayesville Elementary School was reported to the board by Karissa Teague, Hayesville Elementary School Principal. The textbooks, incorporating core subjects, had been given appropriate time for public review in the board room. The textbooks were approved by the board as presented.

Early College bus transportation was terminated following a recommendation from Godfrey to suspend the service to students attending Tri-County Community Early College in Peachtree, N.C. The recommendation received a motion and second to approve the change which was approved with one dissenting vote from board member Reba Beck.

The next regular board meeting will be held at 6 p.m. July 22.
