After an intensive search involving numerous emergency response agencies from across the region, authorities have recovered the body of a kayaker, Michael Pickelsimer, who went missing on Lake Chatuge last week.
As the operation entered its second day, responsibility for coordinating search efforts was assumed by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, which oversees incidents occurring on the lake. Crews continued working throughout Wednesday, deploying a variety of specialized resources in an effort to locate Picklesimer.
Shortly before nightfall on Wednesday, June 10, search teams made a significant breakthrough when the victim was located. Recovery efforts were completed later that evening, bringing the operation to a close.
The search drew support from a wide network of local, state and regional agencies that worked side by side throughout the incident. Officials commended the dedication, teamwork and commitment displayed by all personnel involved in the effort.
Emergency responders also issued a correction to an earlier statement, noting that Cherokee County Emergency Management was unintentionally left off the list of assisting agencies. Officials expressed their appreciation for the agency’s contributions and confirmed that the record has been updated to properly recognize its involvement.
While the recovery marks the end of the search, the loss is deeply felt throughout the community. Responding agencies offered their heartfelt condolences to Pickelsimers' family and friends as they navigate the difficult days ahead.
