Mount Pleasant Baptist Church joined hundreds of churches across the state Aug. 3-10 in a joint initiative called ServeNC, which had them all stepping outside their walls and into their communities. More than 1,000 churches across the state participated.

The initiative, organized by the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina encouraged churches small and large to become the hands and feet of Jesus through service projects in their communities.

Mount Pleasant Baptist saw more than 70 volunteers work on four projects that touched nearly 200 people in our community. The four projects were:

• Tuesday, Aug. 6: Our Tuesday Tea ladies group led a luncheon and ice cream social for the IDD community.

• Wednesday, Aug. 7: MPBC put on a dinner and car wash for the first responders in our area.

• Saturday, Aug. 10: Workers built and installed four benches on the historic Indian trail in downtown Hayesville.

• Saturday, Aug. 10 – Volunteers visited the Clay County Care Center handing out gift bags to the residents and cookies and brownies to the staff. They also brought a guitar and banjo for an impromptu concert in the facility’s general-purpose room.

“We enjoyed all the projects this week,” said Pam Storring who spearheaded the projects for the week. “We are grateful for all who participated and for so many we were able to serve this week.”

The volunteers came from all age groups at Mount Pleasant, with students and children helping to wash first responder vehicles and sing at the Clay County Care Center to young families and seniors helping with the meals and building project. It was a week that Mount Pleasant plans to repeat in the future.

It was a great week and was a blessing to be part of these projects. To see the smiles and shake hands with people around our community was such a huge gift for us. This is what we were called to do. We are praying this week lights a fire for service that spreads across our world.
