The Hayesville Town Council voted Monday to make Curtis Street downtown a one-way street from Main Street to Sanderson near the Hayesville Post Office.

Mayor Joe Slaton noted how busy Hayesville’s Main Street has become and how dangerous that area is at the present time.

Councilwoman Benita England made the motion with Councilman Harry Baughn offering the second. Signs soon will go up informing the public of the change.

The council also proposed honoring Dr. Teresa Heavner, who is retiring from Chatuge Family Practice, by naming a path for her between the DeSoto Square area and Curtis Street.

Baughn said he approved of the idea subject to approval from the board at Clay Comprehensive Health Services, Inc., which oversees the Chatuge practice.

The council sent back to the Planning and Zoning Board a proposed change in the zoning ordinance. The board had submitted a paper noting that “as the trend for smaller houses has accelerated, there is a need to reconsider the 25 percent limitation” on requirements that a 2,000 square foot dwelling have no detached building larger than a quarter size of the existing house.

The change would apply only to accessory buildings no larger than the conditioned ground floor square footage living area of the primary dwelling located on the same lot.

Because many new homes being constructed are between 1,200 and 1,600 square feet, the Planning and Zoning Board had voted for a change in definition. The town council discussed the change at length and voted to send it back to the P&Z Board for more consideration, maybe putting the change under special use.

Councilwoman LaurenTiger made the motion to reject the proposed change and send it back to the P&Z Board. Councilman Baughn offered the second.

Zoning Administrator Ron Wallace said the Board of Adjustment will meet Thursday evening to hear an application for a special use permit to open a restaurant and bar on Tract 2 in Westgate Plaza on Highway 64 West.

He said a zoning compliance certificate has been issued to Cooks Construction for a new 1,200 square foot home on Wayne Brooks Lane off Highway 69 in Hayesville.

Sandy Zimmerman reported to the board that Shop Small Shop Local kicks off its season on Nov. 29-30. Details will be available at: www.historichayesvilleinc.com.

She said the recent Steins and Wine event on the square went very well and raised $6,700 for hurricane relief. The total amount to be donated will be more than $10,000, Zimmerman said. Some of the towns in the Small Town Main Street and Main Street program were hit hard by the storm, Zimmerman said.
