The Hayesville Town

Council has scheduled a

public hearing in March on

a zoning ordinance change

that concerns principal and

accessory buildings.

Under the current zoning

ordinance a principal building

is a building in which is

conducted the primary use of

the lot on which the building

is located.

The Planning and Zoning

Board met earlier this month

and approved two additions

regarding accessory and accessory

dwelling buildings.

An accessory building is

a detached building on the

same lot as a dwelling unit.

It can be no larger than 960

square feet and must adhere

to all building setback requirements.

An accessory dwelling

building is a detached selfcontained

single-family

dwelling on the same lot as

an existing primary singlefamily

dwelling. It may be no

larger than 960 square feet

and must adhere to all building

setback requirements.

The reason for the change

is to clarify existing zoning

requirements. The public

hearing will be held at 6:30

p.m. Monday, March 10, preceding

the regular Hayesville

Town Council meeting.

After the public hearing,

the matter will return to the

Town Council for a vote.

In other discussion in

Monday’s brief Town Council

meeting, Mayor Joe Slaton

said the council should consider

taking up the possibility

of employee salary increases

during the coming year. No

increases have been given in

almost a decade, he said.

The council learned the

2025 Car-B-Que organized

by Rotary Club of Lake

Chatuge is set for June 7.

The annual Mayor’s Yard

Sale is planned for Saturday,

May 10.

Historic Hayesville Inc.’s

Sandy Zimmerman said the

annual Steins and Wine event

is being scheduled for Sept.

20, the same date as the

Cherokee Heritage Festival.
