Thursday, June 15, local veterans said good-bye to veteran George Leduc. Due to health problems, he is being transferred from the care facility in Bryson City to one near family in Colorado.

Over the past several months his wife has had limited in person visits with him due to the drive from Hayesville. Prior to his health decline they had planned to move near family and now it has become more imperative.

While they knew the move was coming and a going away party was planned for that morning, they did not know it would happen that afternoon.

Leduc, former commander of American Legion Post 532, was also active in the patriot riders prior to his decline in health. He was a Vietnam veteran and was exposed to agent orange.

Leduc was part of a special unit that only existed in the Vietnam War called the Seawolves. Leduc was honored last fall by Post 532 with a Quilt for Valor that was donated by Just Stitchin’ in Hayesville.

Currently, his wife Marie is preparing their house to sell and to join George in Colorado along with their sons and grandchildren.
