Doris McCray
Doris McCray, 85, of Hayesville, passed away Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022 in a Clay County care facility. Doris was born Aug. 18, 1937 in Clay County, the daughter of the late Harley and Farris Breedlove Hicks.
After graduating from Hayesville High School in 1955, she moved to Atlanta, Ga. and worked for Sears and Southern Bell.
She returned to Clay County and married Donald McCray in 1956. Doris and Don lived on Fires Creek where they raised their family and she worked at ACI.
A talented master of Swedish weaving embroidery, Doris taught classes and gave individual tutoring in the craft.
Doris had the most giving and loving heart, always caring for and concerned for the welfare of others over her own needs.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Donald McCray, who died Jan. 21, 1993; a son, Larry McCray; a granddaughter, Jennifer McCray; and a brother, Cline Hicks.
Surviving are a son, Steven McCray and wife, Pam, of Mineral Bluff, Ga.; a daughter-in-law, Sue McCray, of Lillington, N.C.; five grandchildren, Stephanie Mauro and husband, Nick, of Raleigh, N.C., Korah Imboden and husband, Jared, of Knoxville, Tenn.; Sofi McCray, of Mineral Bluff, Ga.; Lydia Jones and husband, Nick, of Hayesville, and Mari McCray, of Mineral Bluff; four great-grandchildren, Ryan Mauro, Layla Mauro, Hazel and Violet Jones; three sisters, Judy Logan and husband, Clay, and Joyce Hogan, all of Hayesville, and Carolyn Dills and husband, Bernell, of Duluth, Ga.; and a brother, Ray Hicks and wife, Gail, of Hayesville.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15 in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville with the Revs. Dallas Crowder and Chris Rumfelt officiating. The interment will be in the Fires Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jamie, Chris, Mike, Luke, Coy and Max Logan. Honorary pallbearers will be Clay and Brooks Logan, Bernell and Chad Dills and Trevis Hicks.
The family will receive friends from 12-1:45 p.m. Thursday at the Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville prior to the services.
