Janet Kitchens Powell

Janet Kitchens Powell, 87, of Hayesville, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2022.

She was a native of Clay County where she had lived for most of her life.  She graduated from Hayesville High School and from Western Carolina University, where she received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education.  Janet had a passion for education and the majority of her career was spent in the early education setting, retiring from Clay County Schools.  She had a profound love for her students and took pride in their accomplishments.  She was a member of Hayesville First United Methodist Church.

She was the daughter of the late Neal Robert and Mabel Burch Kitchens, and wife of the late William Hugh Powell who died Feb. 5, 2018.

Surviving are two daughters, Shawn Powell Long and husband, Darrell, of Hayesville, and Lori Powell Hampton and husband, Ryan, of Advance, N.C.; a son Dr. John Neal “Hub” Powell and wife, Kathy, of Asheville, N.C.; 12 grandchildren, Zach Stiles and Olivia; Chris Stiles, Drake and Peyton Long; Ashlyn, Peyton, Nathan and Lauren Hampton; Johanna, Will and Katelyn Powell and Megan Pomeroy and husband, Michael. She is also survived by one great-granddaughter, Alora Mae Beth Stiles.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13 in the Chapel of the Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville with the Reverend Kirk Hatherly officiating. Grandsons will be honorary pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:50 p.m. at the funeral home, prior to the service.
