Johnny H. Stewart, 71, of Hayesville, passed away Friday, Feb. 18, 2022 at his residence. He was born in Murphy to the late Claude and Ora Belle Stewart. He started Stewart Construction Company and J.H.S. Builders and built homes in Clay County for 50 years. He was a former teacher and school board member with Clay County Schools and coached softball at Hayesville High School for 10 years. Johnny loved his family, was an avid fisherman and hunter and loved the outdoors. He enjoyed seeing his kids and grandkids participate in sports. He had a kind heart for all animals and truly loved his dogs. He was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Hayesville.

Johnny was preceded in death by a daughter, Janene Stewart McGee; brothers-in-law, Rev. Harold Ledford, Robert “Bob” Sams, Rayburn Holt, Johnny Holt, Bobby Holt, Herby Holt and Bobby Davis; sisters-in-law, JoAnn Landers, Mary Sue Mitchell, Martha Mott Holt and mother-in-law Bertie Holt.

He is survived by his wife of more than 31 years, Becky Stewart, of Hayesville; a son, Jeff Stewart and wife, Jennifer, also of Hayesville; a son-in law, Donnie McGee of Denver, N.C.; three sisters, Vie Ledford, of Hiawassee, Ga., Judy Sams, of Simpsonville, S.C., and Victoria Malone, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; two brothers, Jimmy Stewart and Jackie Stewart and wife, Kathy, both of Hayesville; sisters-in-law, Ninna Curtis, of Murphy, Margaret Davis of Dallas, Ga., Roxy Allen, of Douglasville, Ga.; brothers-in-laws, Dean Holt and wife, Shelia, of Turtletown, Tenn., Larry Mitchell, of Dallas, Ga., and Harold Holt and wife, Teressa, also of Dallas; grandchildren, Kayla Long and husband, Cory, Jacquelyn Stewart, Justin McGee, Jason McGee, Jeremy Stewart and John McGee; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26 at the chapel of the Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville, with the Rev. Keith Nuckolls officiating.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville, prior to the service.

A private interment will be held at a later date.
