Martha Rainwater Buffington

Martha Rainwater Buffington passed away, unexpectedly, at her home in Hayesville on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2022. Born in Louisville, Ky. and raised in Baton Rouge, La., she made the mountains her home since 2001. She was quite the animal lover and would always open her heart and home to a stray dog or cat. Passionate about the arts, Martha had recently discovered a new-found passion for painting with water colors.

Ms. Buffington is proceeded in death by her parents, Lupton V. Rainwater of Pensacola, Fla. and Barbara Walters Cazedessus, of Baton Rouge.

She is survived by her son, Daniel Buffington, of Wilmington, N.C.; a sister, Tevis Cazedessus, of Hayesville; a brother, Chip Rainwater, of Hayesville; a brother, Rob Rainwater, of Washington, La., and a grandson, Carlos Velazquez, of Andrews, N.C. She is also survived by a niece, Camille Martin, of Hayesville; a niece, Holly Cahill of Jaffry, N.H.; a nephew, Christian Matthews, of Dallas, Texas, and two nephews, Robert and Harrison Rainwater of Baton Rouge.

A private memorial service will be held for family.

In remembrance of Martha’s life, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to Valley River Humane Society in Marble, N.C.
