Denton ladies make history for HHS at state tournament

The women's Invitational Championship Tournament took place at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4 alongside the Women's Showcase Tournament.

Lilli Denton in the 126 pound weight class and Riley Denton, who is also 126 pound weight class but was wrestling in the 138 pound weight class, went to take on the best women wrestlers in the state.

These two ladies wrestled over a few hours and eventually tied for 13th place in each of their weight classes.

Amyna Denton, the freshman of the three ladies went to the Woman’s Showcase tournament where more than 300 girls attended. Amyna wrestled in the 120 pound weight class and came in fourth place.

All ladies walked away with their heads up high and awards for their season long battle to compete in the state tournament.

Friday, Feb. 10, the regular season Regional Tournament will take place comprising of men and women who made top 16 in each weight class. Two men from Hayesville will compete, Gage Michael, a senior who is wrestling in the 145 pound weight class and ranked 9th in the region and Andrew Reynolds in the 160 pound weight class  and ranked 16th in the region.

Lilli is in the 132 pound weight class and ranked 15th and Amyna is in the 120 pound weight class ranked 9th in the region.

The Regional Tournament is co-ed  and will take place at 5 p.m. on  Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10 and 11 at Mitchell High School in Bakersville, N.C.
